Programs

 Every hour 20 Americans are diagnosed as having epilepsy. More than twice as many Americans have seizure disorders (epilepsy) as have Parkinson's Disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy combined! Yet, none of these well-known diseases carry the powerful stigma associated with epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Missouri & Kansas provides the following training programs, community education and services:

Education

Our Education Program provides current and accurate information on epilepsy.

We:

• Present programs on seizure recognition and first aid for groups of all ages.
• Provide a special 5th grade program.
• Offer sessions at the Foundation office on epilepsy and daily living for individuals and families.
• Advocate for the student with epilepsy regarding epilepsy issues in schools and day care centers.
• Answer callers' questions about epilepsy and follow up by sending information.
• Educate employers about epilepsy to open employment opportunities for people with epilepsy.
• Sponsor community seminars on epilepsy featuring area neurologists and epileptologists.

Social Services

Our Social Services program:

• Provides referrals for patient assistance programs for medication
• Advises people with epilepsy on social security, medicaid, insurance and driving issues.
• Makes referrals to other community resources.
• Offers a family support program for families of children with epilepsy 18 years of age and younger.
• Empowers teens and young adults with epilepsy with a youth leadership program, the Epilepsy Foundation Youth Council.
• Sponsors Camp Shing for young people with epilepsy.
• Provides a list of area neurologists.

Community Connection

The Community Connection Program includes:

• Attend Neurology clinics and centers and other medical and psychosocial venues as requested.
• Facilitate the flow of information between the medical setting and the Foundation services related to clinic/center referrals.

Independent Living Services

Our Independent Living Services provides people with epilepsy - 18 years of age and older - information about:

• Developing a more independent life style.
• Living more safely and securely at home and in the community.
• Individualized support.
• Community resources and advocacy.
